After hearing so many good things regarding their live shows and getting Becoming a Jackal in at, a then, cheap deal, Villagers have never really done it for me. Sure, Connor O'Brien's lyrics have a darkness that doesn't sound cliché and tiresome, but the Becoming a Jackal had the unfortunate circumstance of arriving a bit too late, a few tracks unmemorable and ultimately, the record had been done better years before, but soon after with adulation with Bon Iver's second album (which is surprising, since I found both For Emma, Forever and Bon Iver far, far worse).
Villagers' second album {Awayland} is a more bombastic and anthemic affair than it's predecessor, almost at stark contrast with O'Brien's lyrics which suggest a dark underbelly, in similar vein to Hayden Thorpe and Tom Fleming's wordplay for Wild Beasts. In the time I've taken to listen to the album, it does grow on you, becoming more memorable and unique and does well, although only a handful of tracks match the majesty of Ship of Promises.
It has some good moments which treacle through (Earthly Pleasure, Judgement Call, The Bell) and if you loved Becoming a Jackal, you'll know doubt find {Awayland} a fantastic follow-up, but for me; it does take a tad too long to settle but stick with it, and you'll find a good record.
